THE NADCITADEL JOURNAL

What to Prepare Before Hiring a Book Cover Designer

A useful cover brief explains the book, its reader and the practical deliverables.

Describe the book in plain language

Give the designer a short summary, the genre or subject, and the intended reader. Explain the feeling the cover should create. “Clean and modern” becomes more useful when paired with examples and a reason those examples fit your audience.

Confirm the words that will appear

Prepare the exact title, subtitle, author name and any series information. For a back cover, supply approved copy rather than a working version if possible. Changes to a long title can affect the design, so mention uncertain wording early.

Choose references for a reason

Share a few references and explain the element you respond to: typography, colour, composition or mood. References are a conversation tool, not an instruction to reproduce another designer’s work.

List formats and supplied assets

Clarify whether the scope includes an ebook cover, paperback wrap, hardcover or promotional mockups. List photographs and artwork you are supplying and the permissions available. Print preparation needs confirmed production specifications.

Agree on the handoff

Discuss review stages, deliverable formats, editable source files if needed and how additional changes will be handled. A clear brief protects the creative work by reducing avoidable uncertainty.
